WITHIN the next couple of weeks, the market will discover whether Oil Search has made a big oil discovery with what to date appears to be its most exciting wildcat exploration well in the Middle East.
The company yesterday advised the Australian Stock Exchange drilling has been completed on Bina Bawi-1, its first exploration well in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, where there is potential for discovery of a billion barrel sized oil field.
The exact extent of potential oil resources – the potential size is more than three times all the oil discovered to date in Papua New Guinea – will only be known from the results of drilling logs that are currently being run with several signs pointing to a significant discovery.
The Bina Bawi exploration and production sharing agreement, in which Oil Search could earn a 10% direct stake, is 90km north of the “super giant” Kirkuk oilfield and on trend to the Taq Taq oilfield to the southeast.
Initial estimates were that the Triassic reservoir objective within the 30km by 10km surface anticline structure there could contain 1.6 billion barrels of oil with further secondary potential in the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic sections.
Following the spudding of Bina Bawi-1 last Aug 25, Oil Search managing director Peter Botten said the well would be drilled to a planned depth of 3,050m and “take approximately 65 days to reach total depth on a dry hole basis”.
The fact the well has taken some 170 days to drill partly reflects its likely prospectivity with optimism further enhanced with Mr Botten’s announcement yesterday that the deepest 300m section was being prepared for logging.
“The joint venture agreed to commence a testing programme to determine the productive and commercial potential of at least three zones intersected by the well,” he said, indirectly confirming the potential of the three target zones after the well reached its final depth of 3,355m.
Oil Search has a 20% stake in the Bina Bawi EPSA operator, A & T Petroleum, and an option to convert this into a 10% direct interest in the oilfield, leaving A & T with 40% and the US-owned Hawler Energy Ltd with 50%.
In his earlier announcement, Mr Botten said the Kurdistan region was a relatively stable part of Iraq with an acceptable business and security environment.
“We regard our relatively small investment in A & T Petroleum as an early positioning strategy in Iraq’s re-emerging oil and gas industry, balanced against the ongoing political issues and challenges within greater Iraq.”
The Bina Bawi EPSA is close to production facilities and could be brought onstream fairly quickly, adding to current Oil Search production in Yemen and shortly pending production in Egypt.
Oil Search yesterday closed steady at A$3.65, having risen from just below A$3 in September last year.

السعر خفس بعد نزول خبر شراء 8 مليون سهم مفضلة تعطي صاحبها أغلبية الاسهم حق الشركة ومما ينتج عنه زيادة كبيرة بعدد الاسهم في حالة تحويل هذه الاسهم الى اسهم عادية. وأيضا ينتج عنه تقليل البوك فاليو حق الشركة

("Calibre", "the Company") today announced that due to the delay in the filing of its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2006, it received a letter dated April 18, 2007 from The NASD indicating that the Company's common stock is subject to delisting pursuant to NASD Rule 6530 unless the delinquency has been received by the Securities and Exchange Commission by 5:30 EST on May 18, 2007. NASD Rule 6530 require the Company to make on a timely basis all filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission

Calibre's OTC ticker symbol has been appended with a temporary additional "E" which signifies the Company's delinquent status

The Company has been delayed beyond the April 17, 2007 extended filing date prescribed by Rule 12b-25 as it awaits completion of its 2006 annual audit

The Company expects to file its Form 10-K, upon completion of the audit, before the NASD's May 18th deadline
